Convenience Retailer of the Year

Who Can Enter

The Convenience Retailer of the Year award is open to chains operating 10 or more grocery outlets typically up to 3,000sq ft in size. The award is split into three sub-categories: one for best national chain, one for best regional chain, and one for best individual store within a larger chain.

National Chain | Regional Chain
All multiple convenience retailers with 10 or more outlets will be automatically entered and considered in this sub-category:

Companies automatically entered into the national category will include groups such as: The Co-operative Group, little Waitrose, M&S Simply Food, One Stop, Sainsbury’s Local, Tesco Express, Whistlestop

Companies automatically entered into the regional category will include groups such as: CJ Lang, Lawrence Hunt, CK’s Supermarkets, Capper & Co, Tates, G&E Murgatroyd, Henderson Retail, Midcounties Co-op, Southern Co-op, Chelmsford Star Co-op, Midlands Coop, Heart of England Co-op, Lincolnshire Co-op, East of England Co-op, Scotmid

Entry Criteria
Retailers can support their nomination by supplying a PowerPoint presentation of no more than 12 slides demonstrating how they have performed in the 12 months to end of May 2012, covering the following criteria:

  • Financial performance
  • Store/chain development
  • Range and product development (including own-label)
  • Staff training and development
  • Marketing, advertising and promotion
  • Customer service innovation
  • Community involvement
  • Supplier relationships
  • Logistics improvements
  • Environmental efforts, e.g. Fairtrade, ethical policies

Retailers are also invited to provide photographs of the format (not to exceed 20 photos).

Multiple Convenience Store
This award is open to individual stores up to 3,000sq ft in size that form part of a multiple chain with 10 or more outlets. Entrants will need to provide evidence of their achievements in the following areas over the past 12 months, to end of May 2012:

  • Financial performance
  • Store standards
  • Store development
  • Staff training and development
  • Marketing, advertising and promotion
  • Customer service levels
  • Community involvement
  • Environmental efforts
  • Understanding the needs of shoppers
  • Customer loyalty
  • Store innovations
  • Improvements to the business with tangible results
  • Promotional activity

  • Sales per square foot
  • Weekly trading hours
  • Services provided at the store
